Electoral Act: Buhari seeks removal of section barring appointees from contesting elections

President Muhammadu Buhari has formally asked the Senate to delete a section of the Electoral Act 2022 that bars serving political appointees from contesting elections.

The president made the request in a letter read by Senate President Ahmad Lawan at the commencement of plenary on Tuesday.

While assenting to the bill last Friday, Buhari had expressed concern over Section 84(12), which reads: “No political appointee at any level shall be a voting delegate or be voted for at the Convention or Congress of any political party for the purpose of the nomination of candidates for any election.”

Buhari said the section constitutes a disenfranchisement of serving political appointees.
