The Federal Ministry of Youth and Sports Development has said it is ready to conduct elections into 33 federations tomorrow at the MKO Abiola National Stadium, Abuja,

It will be recalled that the ministry had released a statement of plans to conduct fresh elections into national sports federations after the minister, Sunday Dare in April dissolved the federations and inaugurated caretaker committees in the same month.

“The sports federations that are expected to hold their elections on September 30, 2021, include: Nigeria Aquatics Federation, Nigeria Basketball Federation, Nigeria Boxing Federation, Cycling Federation of Nigeria, Nigeria Shooting Federation as well as Nigeria Table Tennis Federation.

“It should be noted that other sports Federations which are yet to ratify their constitutions will also conduct their elections on September 30, 2021, with the guidelines provided by the Ministry,” the ministry stated.

Therefore, the Chairman of the electoral committee, Peter Nelson in a statement said the ministry will be conducting elections into 23 federations using the 2021 electoral guidelines as approved.

“The committee is conducting elections into the 23 federations that were yet to have their own constitutions approved by their international bodies. These Federations’ elections will be conducted using the 2021 Electoral Guidelines approved by the Ministry. However, 10 federations with constitutions will use this to conduct their own elections,” he said.

Nelson affirmed that “Elections were successfully conducted at the zonal levels and other relevant bodies such as NAWIS, NAPHER, Athletes Representatives, Military and Para Military in a free and fair manner”.

At Thursday’s elections, Presidents and Vice presidents of the various National Sports Federations would emerge.

There are 39 sporting federations in Nigeria with 24 of them being national federations of Olympic sports affiliated to the Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC) while the remaining 15 are non-Olympic federations.
