The Wife of Kaduna State Governor, Barrister Asia Mohammed Ahmad, has expressed concern over the infiltration of illicit drugs into the northern region and urged the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) to work with non-governmental organisations to address the menace.

Barrister Asia Mohammed Ahmad, who was presented with an Award of excellence for drug prevention and mentorship by the Drug-Free Arewa Movement during its second annual conference, said the recognition would encourage her to do more.

During the event with the theme: Youths and region’s big issue: Drug abuse, Barrister Ahmad said: “Right now we are battling with the issues of kidnapping and sexual abuse, which are all linked to drug abuse and so it is a holistic approach that will give us an edge.

“This is a full-blown epidemic because when you have a population of about 12 million that is addicted to one form of drug or the other, then you know there is a problem in the community,” she further said.

The wife of the governor urged the NDLEA to work with other sectors adding that, “work with health, NGOs that are working with sexual assault victims and those working with IDPs to see how we can come out with something elaborate that will address each of the sectors because they are all intertwined.”

She said that in accordance with the theme of the event, governors in the northern region were working relentlessly to see to the eradication of drug use within their respective states.
