El-Rufai gov’t has thrown many people out of jobs – Hunkuyi

The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) governorship candidate in Kaduna State, Senator Suleiman Hunkuyi, has accused the state governor, Nasiru Ahmad El-Rufai, of rendering some workers jobless and not providing enough alternatives for them.

The former Senator representing Kaduna North stated this on Tuesday during a chat with Arise TV on issues concerning the NNPP campaign activities in the state.

Hunkuyi said NNPP would review some policies of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) if it wins the state’s governorship election in 2023.

He said the recent tuition fees increment policy in the state’s higher institutions was beyond the capacity of the majority of people in the state.

He said,  “There are some policies that stand reversed. For instance, the school fees setting in Kaduna State. We are in a situation where education has been commercialized. Education has been put only to the rich, of an extremely very insignificant number and percentage of citizens in our state. Fees that are far beyond the reach of even public servants at a higher level is unacceptable.

“We are reversing those policies. And in reversing policies, you have to get ready to accommodate certain adjustments within the educational background and policy in Kaduna State. This we need to do because education is a social service.

“We have prepared to reach out on our primary healthcare programme to every nook and cranny and indeed, the rural settings and populace.

“This administration, which we are currently in, had attempted to do that. Billions of naira have been spent – which is a good idea and initiative – but what is on the ground is nothing to write home about. We intend to relaunch this.

The former senator said his government would also review the issue of workers who had been fired under El-Rufai-led administration.

He said, “Also, policies of government today that need quick revisiting and quick relaunch, are policies that have to do with staffing.

“Kaduna State government under the APC today has put so many people out of jobs, yet creating so little number of jobs. And in so doing, compounding the issue of social ladder on which every government is supposed to accommodate.

“So many people have been thrown out of their means of livelihood. And we feel for them. We are not advocating for bringing back the almost 100,000 staff that have been put out of jobs. But we intend to review and revisit those areas because so many people are crying because they’ve been out of jobs for no justifiable reason.”
