El-Amin holds sports contest to raise students’ alertness

El-Amin International School, Minna has organised its 26th inter-house sports competition as part of the extra-curricular activities to improve students’ self-esteem and mental alertness.

Students from both primary and secondary schools, grouped into houses took part in the contest involving track and field events, which was eventually won by the Maroon House.

Speaking during the event, the principal of the school, Mr. Vincent Nkama, said the essence of the competition was to get the students engaged in sporting activities to keep them fit as well as allow them to find their hidden talents in athletic abilities.

He announced that the school’s Executive Director, Dr. Muhammad Babangida had since his appointment ten years ago after the death of the Founder; Dr. (Mrs) Maryam Babangida maintained excellence in competitive school sports mainly by encouraging students to achieve the best of their ability in their chosen sports.

He applauded the efforts of the teachers and non-teaching staff in carrying out the vision of the school.

The event was well-attended by sports enthusiasts as well as parents and relations from all works of life, while various prizes were won by the students.

Earlier, there was a march-past by a group of students and color guard inspection by the special guests of honor, Hon. Mohammed Bashir Lokogoma, Chairman of Appropriation Committee, Niger State House of Assembly, representative of the Emir of Minna, Alh. (Dr.) Umar Farouk Bahago and the Catholic Bishop of Minna, Most Rev. Martin Igwe Uzoukwu.

Also in attendance was Alh Hassan Jallo,  Ibrahim Ebbo, the PTA Chairman, and Mal. Shittu Muhammad shafi, NASFAT Chief Missioner of Niger State.

The sports activities included, 50m dash, catching the train, skipping race, 100m obstacle fast walk, 200m obstacle number race, 100m race, 4x100m relay race, staff race.

Others were bottle race 100m girls, obstacle race 100m boys, discus throw for boys and girls and shot put for boys and girls.

Also, students invited from other schools took part in the relay race, while some parents participated in a ‘parent’s race.’

Maroon House with more medals won the 26th edition of the Joint Inter-house Sports; Yellow House came second followed by Green House. Red House won 4th position, Blue House came 5th and Purple House came 6th.
