The Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, under the leadership of its President General and Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, has directed that the crescent moon of Shawwal should be searched for today.
A statement issued in Ilorin by the Secretary General of the Council, Professor Is-shaq Oloyede, said if the crescent moon is sighted by experts tonight, the Sultan would declare tomorrow as the first day of Shawwal, the Eid-el-fitri day.
According to the statement, if the crescent moon is not sighted tonight, Wednesday automatically becomes the first of Shawwal, the Eid-el-fitri day.
The Council in the statement enjoined Muslims all over the country to be on the lookout for the directive of its President General on the completion of this year’s Ramadan fast and the observance of Eid-el-fitri prayer.
The Council also advised Muslims to fast for six days between the second and the end of Shawwal, and reminded the Muslim Ummah of the necessity of paying zakatul-fitri with the intention of lifting the hearts of the indigent members of the community and urged them to ensure its delivery to the appropriate recipients, the poor.
The Statement encouraged Muslims to continue praying for peaceful co-existence in the country, as they keep the virtues and gains of the sacred month as a spiritual guide towards accelerated development as individuals and as a nation.
