Eid al-Fitr: S/Arabia, Qatar, UAE declare Wednesday first Shawwal

Saudi Arabia, Qatar and the UAE have announced that Eid al-Fitr in these countries will be celebrated on July 6, Al Jazeera reports.

Authorities made the announcement on Monday evening after failing to sight the moon that marks the start of the three-day festival.

The starting day varies every year and from country to country depending on geographical location.

Eid al-Fitr means "festival of breaking the fast" and marks the end of the fasting month of Ramadan.

Traditionally, it is celebrated for three days and is an official holiday in all Muslim-majority countries.
