EFCC to arraign ex-Air Force chief, gets warrant on Fani-Kayode

A former Chief of Air Staff, Mohammed D. Umar, is to be arraigned by the EFCC today before Justice Binta Murtala Nyako of the Federal High Court, Abuja, over an alleged N4bn fraud, Daily Trust  gathered yesterday.
The former Air Force chief has been implicated in the ongoing probe of defence spendings during the tenure of President Goodluck Jonathan, EFCC sources told Daily Trust.
According to the sources, Umar is being arraigned for allegedly siphoning over N4bn from the coffers of the Nigerian Air Force while he was the service chief between 2010 and 2012. Umar is said to have used the funds to acquire properties in Kano and Abuja, which were traced to him by EFCC detectives.
In February the presidential committee auditing arms purchases since 2007 forwarded a list of retired and serving military officers to the EFCC for further investigation. A security source who confided in Daily Trust said the list contains names of former service chiefs and many serving and retired officers.
The first set of 17 officers indicted and asked to be further investigated by the EFCC are former Chief of Defence Staff and retired Air Chief Marshal Alex Badeh.
It was also gathered yesterday that the EFCC has obtained a remand warrant to keep Femi Fani-Kayode in custody while investigation continues.
Fani-Kayode was arrested and detained at the head office of the Commission where he is being grilled over allegations of corruption.
Fani-Kayode honoured an EFCC invitation inviting him to its office to explain his alleged connection to ongoing investigations into N840 billion received before the 2015 presidential election. He said he did not receive N1.7bn from former president Goodluck Jonathan or former National Security Adviser (NSA), retired Colonel Sambo Dasuki as claimed.
