EFCC shock Nasarawa United to win 2022 Unity Pre-season tourney

Nigeria National League (NNL) side, EFCC FC Abuja, emerged champions of the 2022 Unity Pre-season tournament after they edged NPFL giants, Nasarawa United 4-3 on penalties in the finals decided over the weekend in Abuja.

The final match which was watched by a capacity crowd at the Area 3 football field Garki ended in a 1-1 draw in regulation time.

Masoud Danjuma opened the scoring for EFCC from the spot as early as the 7th minute after Nasarawa United’s goalkeeper, Yinka David, was adjudged by the referee to have fouled an opponent in the box.

On resumption, the more experienced Nasarawa United who were runners-up in the 2021 edition of the tournament, took the game to their opponents and were rewarded in the 55th minute when Joshua John capitalized on a mix-up in the EFCC defence to score the equalizer.

In the penalty shoot-out that ensued, the EFCC boys who had eliminated another NPFL side, Lobi Stars on penalties in the second semi-final match maintained their composure to win again 4-3 on penalties.

 After misses by Nasarawa United’s Abubakar Abdullahi and Chinedu Ohanachom, EFCC converted four of their five spot kicks to be crowned champions of the 2022 edition of the Unity pre-season tournament.

Meanwhile, the Coordinator of the pre-season tournament and former vice-chairman of the FCT FA, Patrick Ngwaogu, expressed the appreciation of the organisers to various football stakeholders for supporting them to ensure the successful completion of the competition.
