Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki has appealed to the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Usman Alkali Baba, to deploy a special squad to the state to stem the rising community conflicts and arms proliferation.

Obaseki made the appeal Tuesday in Benin, the state capital when he received the IGP in his office.

“Rising conflict within our communities is now our challenge. Lots of communities are having conflict and we have seen a lot of arms build-up and we need to put a stop.

“We have enacted a law to deal with these challenges and anyone found guilty faces a 10-year jail term. So, we need a special squad to help us handle this,” the governor said.

He assured the IGP of adequate support in the area of capacity building, logistics and upgrade of facilities.

“Rebuilding of police stations burnt during the #EndSARS protest has already commenced,” he said.

Earlier, the IGP said he was in the state on a familiarization tour and to seek the support of stakeholders in crime prevention and control.

According to him, police have challenges in areas of equipment, logistics, training, among others, hence the need for stakeholders’ support in addressing insecurity.

“Security agents can’t fight crimes alone; this is why the government came up with community policing to help secure our communities.

“We will train community police officers on rudiments of community policing in order to have the knowledge of providing intelligent reports and how to go about their duties in line with the law,” he said.

The police boss said the recruitment of the vigilantes should be done by traditional rulers so as not to recruit persons of questionable characters that would jeopardize policy.

He appealed to the state government to support the community police officers in order to encourage them in supporting security agents in crime-fighting.

On his part, the Oba of Benin, Oba Ewuare II urged the IGP to seek improved welfare for his officers.

He stressed that lack of accommodation, poor remuneration, coupled with the non-availability of modern equipment, hindered the officers from functioning adequately.
