The Edo State Ministry of Social Development and Gender Issues has relocated children from Zuma Memorial Orphanage, Irrua, in Esan Central LGA, to Benin City on account of its dilapidated condition.
The Permanent Secretary in the Ministry, Mrs Barbara Osobajo, represented by the Director of Child Department, Mrs Kate Bello, said the development at the orphanage became necessary due to lack of basic amenities and other facilities for operation, including substandard accommodation, poor record keeping and lack of proper care for the children.
Mrs Osobajo, therefore, advised all orphanage homeowners to keep to standard and adhere strictly to the rules guiding their operations in the state.

While noting that the state government was against illegal operation of orphanages, she stressed that the government would sanction orphanages that hid under the guise of their status to commit crime, saying the full weight of the law would be brought against those who perpetrated such unwholesome acts.
