Edo Queens maintain unbeaten run in Betsy Obaseki football tourney

Edo Queens continued with their unbeaten run in the ongoing Betsy Obaseki Women’s Football Tournament (BOWFT) after overpowering hard-fighting Remo Stars Ladies 2-1 in yesterday’s Group A match decided at the UNIBEN Sports Complex in Benin, the Edo State capital.

It will be recalled that Edo Queens opened their campaign on Monday with a slim 1-0 win over Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) arch rivals, Naija Ratels.

In yesterday’s match, the host fell behind early in the keenly contested fixture as Arubo Oluwaseyi put Remo Stars Ladies in front in the 15th minute before Abideen Suliat drew Edo Queens level in the 41st minute for the half to end on even terms.

On resumption, Edo Queens intensified their offensive play against the Ogun State-based team and their persistence paid off when they awarded a penalty which was expertly converted by Suliat Abideen in the 90th minute.

At the end of proceedings, Esther Moses of Edo Queens took home the award for the Most Valuable Player of the Match (MVP) which was presented to her by the Edo State First Lady, Betsy Obaseki.

Speaking after the match, the Edo State First Lady expressed satisfaction with the quality of play by both teams.

On her part, Abideen Suliat, who scored a brace in the match exuded confidence as she expressed her belief that Edo Queens would win the tournament.

Meanwhile, in the second match of the day, defending champions, FC Robo of Lagos also recorded their second win of the competition as they thrashed hapless Heartland Ladies 3-1.

FC Robo had begun their title defence with a 3-1 trouncing of Championship side, Fortress Ladies on Tuesday, October 24.

While tomorrow will be observed as a rest day at the tournament, action will resume on Saturday with quarter-final matches to be played at Western Boys’ Mini-Stadium and UNIBEN Sports Complex.

The grand finale will be played on November 1 at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium.

The winner of the tournament is expected to go home with N7m cash prize while runners-up, third and fourth place teams will receive N5m, N3m and N1.5m respectively just as the other participating clubs will get N750,000 each as consolation prizes.
