The Edo State Government has given 12 days to mortuary operators in the state who are yet to obtain operational licence to get approval from the Ministry of Health.

The order came as the government revealed it had uncovered 23 embalmed corpses, and a mummified body without skull in one of the mortuaries in the state.

The Commissioner for Health, Obehi Akoria, revealed this on Monday while briefing journalists and security operatives in an update the shrine recently uncovered by security agencies in Benin.

He also urged mortuary owners who registered to come with proof of registration on Friday, September 30.

He said, “For those who are not duly registered, they have till the close of business on September 9, to present themselves to the Ministry of Health to get the basic requirements for the operation of the mortuaries or embalmment homes in the state.”

Earlier, Olawore Oluwole of the police Criminal Investigative Department (CID), said 10 suspects were arrested in connection with the shrine.

He said the principal suspect, Gabriel Otu, later reported and made statements, noting that other hospitals and mortuaries were equally visited.

He said, “The principal suspect didn’t acquire formal training, but only worked at different mortuaries as an attendant. The principal suspect doesn’t have the certificate to practice as a mortician, and does not even have any certification from the traditional board, health and environment ministries or any other appropriate certification.”

Oluwole further said, “The building utilised by him was not certified nor approved by the Ministries of health or environment.

“Other facts revealed that the mortuary is not a layout for trado-medical institution.”
