Edo gov’ship: Igbinedion’s daughter, Omosede, resigns from PDP

Less than 38 days before the September 21governorship election in Edo State, Omosede Gabriella Igbinedion, daughter of the People Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain and business mogul, Chief Gabriel Igbinedion, has resigned from the party.

Omosede, who represented Ovia Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives from 2015 to 2019 on the PDP platform, attributed her resignation to the marginalisation of what she described as “Aboriginal PDP members.”

In her resignation letter addressed to the state and national leadership of the PDP, Omosede stated, “I tender my resignation from the PDP, the platform on which I was elected to the House of Representatives.”

She further explained, “Based on the principles of equity, fairness, and justice that I hold dear, which no longer prevail within our party in the state, coupled with the marginalisation of the aboriginal PDP members who have worked tirelessly to sustain this party, I no longer have the drive, conviction, sentiment, and commitment towards a party that I once called home.”

Omosede questioned the party’s direction, noting that “there is no indigenous PDP member either as the gubernatorial candidate or deputy governorship running mate. This brings to the fore the question: who exactly are we working for?”

She expressed that her overriding interest and commitment to the people of Ovia, who have always supported her, supersede her personal and other interests. “It is on this note that I have decided to tender my resignation from the PDP, effective from today, August 11, 2024.”

While Omosede has not disclosed her next political move, she has been associated with the APC in the state.

It could be recalled that Omosede belonged to the legacy coalition group of the PDP led by the suspended party National Vice Chairman, South-South, Chief Dan Orbih. Several members of the legacy coalition group have resigned and joined the APC, while others who remain in the PDP have also shown support for the APC’s governorship candidate.
