The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has donated a total quantity of 3,999 tons of cereals consisting of millet and sorghum to Nigeria.
Speaking during the official handing over of the grain to Nigeria in Kano, ECOWAS Commissioner of Agriculture, Environment, and Water Resources, Mr. Sékou Sangaré said that the donations would complement the multidimensional support that ECOWAS has provided to Nigeria since the advent of COVID-19 in the country on February 27, 2020.

According to him, the donation followed the outcome of the harmonised framework for identifying risk areas and vulnerability, which showed that over 7,087,102 people are currently in difficult food situations in the country, including Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) and children affected by malnutrition.
He also revealed that the donations came from ECOWAS and other donor partners that have contributed to the humanitarian gesture to African countries.
The Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development, Hajiya Sadiya Umar Farouk, stated that through the ministry’s coordination, over 70,000 metric tons of grains including rice, maize millet and sorghum have been distributed to the vulnerable across the federation.
