Ebonyi guber poll: Umahi retains seat

The incumbent governor of Ebonyi state and candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Engr. David Umahi, has been declared winner of Saturday’s governorship election in the state by the electoral umpire, INEC.

Umahi of the PDP scored a total of 393,043 votes while his closest rival from the All Progressives Congress (APC) came second with 81,703 votes.

Announcing the result on Sunday, the state’s INEC Collation Officer, Prof. Frank Chukwuemeka, said that a total of 482,018 votes were gotten as valid votes while 10,084 were rejected votes.

Prof. Chukwuemeka added that voting exercise, which he described as free and fair, had 497,291 as total number of accredited voters in the poll.

He explained that the state had a total of 1,432,528 as number of registered voters.

“That David Nweze Umahi having certified the requirement by law is hereby declared winner and is return elected,” he declared.

The result was declared at about 8:20pm under tight security.

Reacting via a statement signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Emmanuel Uzor, the state governor expressed his unalloyed loyalty to the patriotic citizens of Ebonyi state for re-electing him for another term.

He promised to consolidate on the aggressive infrastructural, human development and industrialization of the state.

The governor also reiterated his readiness to hand over power to Abakaliki bloc in 2023 after completing his second term.

He also commended the INEC for conducting a credible election in the state.
