Eagles training pitch ready in April

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Eagles will have their camp for the World Cup in Durban.

Mr Joe Erasmus, Senior College Head, Ashton International College, Ballito, Durban, the location of the training field, told NAN that work to upgrade the pitch in line with FIFA standards had started.

The development comes just as South Africa Football Association (SAFA) settled for Sturrock Park at Wits University for  Bafana Bafana, after dropping their first choice, Esselen Park, due to refurbishment concerns.

Sandown High School, which was considered after, was also dropped before settling for Sturrock Park on Thursday.

Erasmus gave the assurance that the pitch would be in shape by the time the Eagles arrive next month as the refurbishment at Ballito was on course.

The Super Eagles are expected to arrive in Richards Bay in May before moving to Ballito early in June to camp and stay at the Hampshire Hotel, which is only few minutes’ drive from the training pitch.

He said the people in the area were anxiously waiting for the Super Eagles, adding that they would adopt the Nigerians as their team.

Finishing touches were also being put to the Hampshire Hotel, where the team would stay during the competition.

The General Manager of the newly opened hotel, Mr Roodney Bull, said work was on to put a few things in order at the site.

He said officials of the Nigerian Consulate and the NFF expressed pleasure at the facility when they visited the camp recently.

“The Super Eagles will be absolutely looked after like kings,’’ he said.

Bull assured of adequate security for the team by the hotel’s personnel as well as those to be provided by FIFA and the South African Police Services (SAPS).

“We will have control access points to ward off unwanted people,’’ Bull added. (NAN)
