E-call up: NPA to punish erring truckers — Amaechi

The Minister of Transportation, Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, has ordered the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) to punish truckers who fail to comply with the electronic all-up system for trucks coming into the ports.

NPA had said it will enforce the call up system starting on February 27 to curb the traffic congestion at the ports access roads.

The Minister gave this charge during the inspection of the Lagos-Ibadan rail line project at the rail end of the Apapa port spur line last weekend.

He added that President Muhammadu Buhari has issued a directive that only a certain tonnage of cargo should be allowed on roads, noting that the directive will be complied with.

He however said the directive has not been implemented as there are no viable alternatives to roads earlier.

The Minister also took a train ride on the completed southward 8.72 kilometre Apapa Port Spur Line, a termination of the Lagos-Ibadan rail line, where he frowned at the numerous trucks parked on the rail tracks.

Amaechi then directed NPA to ensure that the trucks are moved out, adding that only registered trucks moving goods imported or to be exported be allowed into the ports.
