Detectives attached to the homicide section of the Lagos State Criminal Investigations Department (SCID), Panti Street, Yaba, have taken over the investigation into the death of a 12-year-old student of Dowen College, Lekki, Sylvester Oromoni Jnr, who allegedly died as a result of injuries sustained in the hands of suspected student cultists.

This follows a directive by the state commissioner of police, Hakeem Odumosu, mandating the unit to take over the investigation on Thursday.

Our correspondent learnt that five students (names withheld) who allegedly beat him up and forced liquid substance into his mouth and locked him up in a wardrobe for hours for refusing to be initiated into their cult group had been penciled down for interrogation.

But controversy has continued to trail the circumstance that led to his death on November 30 after displaying unusual hallucinations and withdrawal at home during holidays following the traumatic experience he allegedly went through in the hands of senior students of the school who wanted him initiated into their cult group.

The management of the school had earlier debunked claims that he was assaulted by some senior students for his refusal to belong to their cult group, adding that he (Oromoni) sustained internal injury while playing football with his peers.

A statement by the Lagos State Police Command’s PRO, CSP Adekunle  Ajisebute confirmed that the Homicide section had been given the mandate to unearth perpetrators of the dastardly act and be made to face the music.

Meanwhile, the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has called for the immediate arrest of the Principal and the House Master of Dowen College for a thorough investigation and subsequent prosecution over their negligence which led to the attack and death of their student, Sylvester Oromoni.

Similarly, Lagos students under the aegis of the National Union of Lagos State Students (NULASS) have asked the management of Dowen College to produce the murderers of Oromoni.
