The wife of Lagos state governor, Mrs. Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, has charged parents and guardians to avoid subjecting their children and wards to slavery and abuse, saying such acts are detrimental to their growth and development.
She disclosed this in Lagos when she received representatives of RenWoman alongside its partner, Rising Tide, who paid her a courtesy call.
RenWoman is an initiative of Rendeavour – the builder of Alaro City – aimed at empowering African women.
Speaking, the RenWomen team said the visit was to offer necessary support to the Lagos First Lady towards rehabilitating destitute and less privileged children in the state.
“The First Lady is very passionate about the rights of children and women; and this is something that resonates with our objectives,” Adejoke Odocha, Rendeavour’s Legal Counsel for West Africa, said during the visit.
She added: “We will work with her to take children off the streets and raise awareness for the rights of children in Lagos.”
It would be recalled that Rendeavour, in partnership with the Lagos State Government, is building Alaro City, a mixed-income city-scale development in the Lekki Free Zone.
Odocha noted that communities around Alaro City will be the target of RenWoman’s interventions in rehabilitating the street children.
“RenWoman will work with the Lagos State First Lady to reverse the cycle of poverty especially among street children and the disadvantaged in the communities around Alaro City and in Lagos State in general,” said Funke Beke, Rendeavour’s Real Estate Advisor.
“This is something that we are passionate about in all the countries we operate in and we are therefore pleased to find a formidable partner in the First Lady for our plans for Lagos,” she added.
Meanwhile, Mrs. Sanwo-Olu welcomed the support by RenWoman and also reiterated her commitment to partnering organisations like Rendeavour with focus on championing children’s rights in the state.
