Professor of Agronomy at the Michael Okpara University of Agriculture Umudike (MOUAU), Abia State, Professor Dominic Aja Okpara, has recommended the adoption of the Songhai Integrated System of farming in the country as the way out of the present low yield of crops.
In his paper at the 23rd inaugural lecture of the university entitled “Crop Interactions and Nutrient Management: Implications for Food Security in Degraded Ecosystems’’, Okpara said the land saving production system and technologies should be used to minimize reliance on expansion of land area for increasing production.
“The Songhai Integrated System should be adopted or replicated in the states of the federation to create products and services that hold the potential to dramatically increase productivity, ensure nutritional quality and eliminate waste and pollution,” he said.
This, he said, became necessary because of the high population density that has put pressure on the available land for crop production saying that intercropping and cropping intensity (number of crops grown per annum on a given area of land) was a way out of the pressure on the limited land space for increased agricultural production.
