Doctor arrested for assaulting minor in Edo

The Edo State Police Command has arrested a medical doctor with Irrua Specialist Teaching Hospital (ISTH), Irrua, Dr. Chiamaka Ogbonnaya, 41, over alleged assault on her housemaid identified as Comfort Nmeson.

It was learnt that the doctor, a paediatrician, brought the minor, who is a 13-year-old student of Emando Secondary School in Ekpoma, to Irrua for domestic assistance.

According to a source, Chaimaka was arrested following a report by a teacher in the victim’s school to the police, after she came to the school with her belongings looking frail.

The suspect was accused of frequently assaulting the girl with a mop stick, turning stick, cane, or any other object in sight on her ribcage.

She was also accused of sending the girl out after the assault and also giving her raw rice, saying that would be her food for one week.

When contacted, the state command spokesperson, SP Chidi Nwabuzor, confirmed the arrest of Dr Chiamaka.

“On June 22, the minor came to school with her belongings and looking frail. Upon interrogation by the teachers of the school, the child said she did not want to live with her guardian anymore and requested to be returned to her biological mother as her guardian had been physically abusing her using a stick to reprimand her all the time”.

Consequently, the teacher reported the abuse to the police and the said guardian, one Dr Chiamaka who is 41 years old was arrested by the police and would be charged to court upon completion of the investigation.
