The Federation of Muslim Women’s Associations in Nigeria (FOMWAN) has opened a marriage counselling class for married and intending Muslim couples in Kaduna.

The move, it said, was to address the high rate of divorce especially among Muslim couples across the country.

The Amira, FOMWAN Kaduna State chapter, Pharmacist Aisha Isyaku Tukur disclosed this at the association’s 27th Ramadan lecture held in Kaduna.

She said, “The association, in collaboration with Sultan Bello Mosque, has introduced marriage counselling classes for married and intending couples to counsel them on what is expected of them as husband and wife and most especially as parents as enshrined in the Qur’an and the teachings of the Prophet.”

In a lecture titled, “Ideal relationship between spouses: A basis for proper upbringing of children: The Islamic perspective”, the permanent commissioner, Kaduna State Peace Commission, Hajiya Khadija Gambo said violence and bias against Muslim women in their matrimonial homes were becoming alarming and unacceptable.

A lecturer from the Ahmadu Bello University, ABU, Zaria, Professor Yahaya Mujahid charged parents to discharge their responsibilities to their families effectively.

He said the country’s rising insecurity was due to parental failure.
