Residents of Wuye District in the Federal Capital Territory, yesterday, called on the Federal Capital Territory Administration to come to their rescue before diseases breakout in the community.

The residents, many of them of Sola Adebiyi Crescent,  said their houses are always flooded with water, feaces from a sewage abandoned by the contractors that constructed the road in the area as well as others from a nearby settlement.

They said the incident had been making life unbearable for them.

According to them, if nothing is done soon to salvage the situation, the community might witness an outbreak of diseases like cholera which has been ravaging other parts of the territory.

When Daily Trust visited the community, a resident of the area, Abubakar Sheriff, said “We have a serious problem with regards to our sewage system, which was caused by the non-completion of the road, unfortunately in our own case, in Sola Adebiyi street, the earth work has been completed, the drains are in position, in fact as I speak with you, all the residents are using the same sewage constructed by the contractors, for our waste disposal.

“However, because the road has not been asphalted, anytime it rains, the rain water takes some of the sand into the sewage, into the drain and blocks it, once the sewage is blocked, you will see feaces coming out, you will see them all over the road, and with the current epidemic going round, we want the government to come to our aid, otherwise anything can happen. So we are pleading with the government to come to our aid as soon as possible.”

Abubakar said, “The sewage was constructed by contractors brought in by the FCTA, we have made several attempts to reach them, but not successful. The situation, we heard, has to do with payment but residents of Sola Adebiyi street are suffering. If the road was completed, this situation would not have come up.

“So we want the minister to please come to our aide, to make sure that the remaining parts of the road are completed.”

On his part, Chief Charles Aturu, lamented the type of danger they are exposed to, adding that any time it rains, the houses are always flooded and it comes with dirt like feaces from the cows and sewage system.

Chief Aturu said, “We are hearing of cholera outbreaks here and there even in the FCT, so we are very afraid of what will happen here, we are appealing to the government to come to our aid, we don’t want to die.’’
