Imo police identify corpse of cop found in the street

Police Imo has identified the corpse of a policeman found on a street in Owerri as Inspector Haruna Kaura, and believe he was murdered.

He was of the 18 Police Mobile Force, but attached to Imo Government House, Owerri, according to public spokesman SP Orlando Ikeokwu.

The discovery of the body of a policeman in Owerri caused panic in the city.

It comes amidst heightened tension as the state recorded its first case of Covid-19.

The dead policeman has been identified as an inspector of police, and was found in front of Police Shell Camp quarters opposite Alvaina Primary School in Owerri Municipal Council early Tuesday morning.

The cause of death is unknown yet, but a police source said authorities were being cautious because of fears of Covid-19 pandemic.

Police said the command received report of “lifeless body” lying around Shell Camp Primary School.

A team of policemen was despatched to the scene where the body was identified as Inspector Haruna Maura of No. 18PMF Swuadron attached to Government House.”

Ikeokwu said that the policeman was suspected to have been murdered as, “He was observed to have his identity card in his Palm and his trouser pulled down with his service pistol taken away while marks of violence were visibly seen around his back/neck region.”
