Disagreement over N50 sugarcane turns bloody in Kwara

There was pandemonium in the popular Mandate Market, Ilorin on Tuesday between a sugarcane seller and a buyer over N50 sugarcane.

Daily Trust gathered the issue degenerated to a free for all as weapons were used by opposing parties. This led to the closure of the market for several hours.

It was also learnt that some persons who sustained stab wounds were rushed to the nearby general hospital.

But another account said some of the miscreants that usually milled around the market started the fight with one of the victims leading to pandemonium.

Commercial activities were halted while the trouble lasted as mobile policemen later arrived to ensure normalcy returned to the market.

The traders in the market, however, expressed apprehension of another possible attack if the issue was not well handled.

When our reporter visited the scene, policemen and some civil defence officers were stationed on guard at the entrance to forestall further breakdown of law and order.

Speaking on the development, the Public Relations Officer of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Babawale Afolabi, said trouble started when a man reportedly bought a N50 sugarcane but found out that it was not sweet.

He said the man’s request to change the sugarcane was rejected by the seller who later stabbed the buyer.
