Disability commission to establish department of assistive technology

The National Commission for Persons with Disabilities (NCPWD) has commenced processes for the establishment of a dedicated Department of Assistive Technology at its headquarters in Abuja.

The development was unveiled by the commission’s executive secretary, Dr James David Lalu during a virtual meeting with local innovators in the field of assistive technology Tuesday.

The event coincided with the commemoration of the inaugural World Day of Assistive Technology marked on June 4.

In a press release, the media head of the NCPWD said the virtual meeting provided a platform for innovators to showcase their inventions and explore opportunities for large-scale production.

It added that the newly established department would be responsible for coordinating and implementing solutions in assistive technology, with a strong focus on local manufacturing.

“This initiative is a key component of Dr Lalu’s eight-point inclusive transformation agenda, specifically the second item, which seeks to position assistive technology as a vital and profitable sector in Nigeria.

“The NCPWD remains committed to enhancing the lives of persons with disabilities through innovative and locally-produced technological solutions.”
