Delta state is to begin statewide immunisation starting from three communities where a yellow fever outbreak is on, after two more people died of the disease.
The latest casualties bring to 24 the number of people who have died in the outbreak in affected communities of Ika North East.
But the number of dead in the three neigbhouring communities of Ute-Okpu, Ute-Erumu and Idumuesah in Ika North East is believed to have exceeded 30.
Delta State Governor Ifeanyi Okowa announced the start of immunisation and reaffirmed tests showed the cause of death to be yellow fever.
“The situation we are facing now is terrible. The result we have pointed to yellow fever and we are taking measure to curb the spread. The worse is that the death is usually from 18 to 30 years age bracket,” he said.
“I don’t know why it started from my local government. Maybe, it wants my immediate attention. We just kicked off the immunisation exercise from the affected local government and that will last for 10 days.
“After the local government, the exercise will move to other local government areas in the state. I have received that additional two just died,” Okowa said.
