Despite a directive by the national leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the postponement of the Delta State Congress, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege/Chief Great Ogboru’s faction of the State APC went ahead to conduct a state congress this weekend.
In a letter dated May 18, 2018, made available to Daily Trust, the APC National Secretary, Hon. Mai Mala Buni had informed the Independent National Electoral Committee (INEC) of the postponement and rescheduling of Delta State Congress to Monday, 21 May, 2018.
But the Chairman of the Delta State Congress Committee, Senator Olugbenga Obadara, in company of Senator Ovie Omo-Agehe, Chief Great Ogboru, wife of former natuinal chairman of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Mrs. Marian Ali and Chief Frank Kokori, arrived the St. Mulumba College, Okpanam, venue of the congress at about 1.30pm.
Flanked by two other committee members, Senator Obadara returned the incumbent 35-man state executive committee, led by Prophet Jones Erue, state chairman and Mr. Chidi Okonji as secretary by voice affirmation.
Senator Obadara advised aggrieved protestants to channel their grievances to the appropriate Appeal Panel, shortly after the rowdy exercise that lasted barely 15 minutes.
At a post congress interview, Senator Omo-Agege argued that the national chairman or any member of the APC national working committee has no power to postpone a scheduled congress, except on the advice of the respective congress committee.
While the Congress Committee Chairman called for objection over the exercise, a contestant for State Youth Leader, Mr. John Azike protested his disenfranchisement from the election, having been duly nominated by his Oshimili North Local government area to vie for the position.
He was alarmed that the there was no accreditation of delegates, talk less of calling out nominees and contestants for various positions, adding that aside the State Youth Leader positiin, the State Secretary and Assistant State Treasurer positions were also duly nominated to be contested.
