Defence HQ, NGF host golf tourney to mark 2025 Armed Forces Remembrance Day

In partnership with the Defence Headquarters, the Nigeria Golf Federation (NGF) organized a special golf tournament in Abuja to commemorate Armed Forces Remembrance Day (AFRD).

Held annually to honour Nigerian Armed Forces veterans, including those of World War I, World War II, and the Civil War, this year’s AFRD featured no fewer than 200 golfers at the Goodluck Ebele Jonathan (GEJ) Golf Club.

The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), Gen. Christopher Musa, represented by the Chief of Defence Intelligence (CDI), Maj. Gen. EAP Undiandeye, performed the ceremonial tee-off. Musa emphasized the event’s significance, describing it as a celebration of retired and fallen heroes.

“This golf tournament is part of activities lined up to commemorate the Armed forces’ Remembrance Day. Beyond that, it is also in collaboration with the NGF.

“The federal government led by President Bola Tinubu has been most supportive of our operations over the years, and we are going to continue to do our best to ensure we restore peace and security to the good people of Nigeria. Indeed, this Armed Forces will not relent until total peace is won and achieved,” he said.

NGF President, Otunba Olusegun Runsewe, praised President Tinubu for honoring Nigeria’s fallen heroes. He emphasized the importance of celebrating those who sacrificed their lives for the nation’s unity.

Anaryu, playing off handicap 18, emerged as the winner of the men’s serving category with a gross score of 86 and a net of 68, also securing the best net prize of the tournament. Y.G. Goshi followed closely with a net score of 69, earning the second net prize, while B.D. Solomon, with a handicap of 13, won the best gross prize with a gross score of 83 and a net of 70.

In the men’s veteran category (handicap 0–28), HBZ Vintenaba claimed the best gross prize with a gross score of 82 and a net of 71. S.U. Atawodi won the best net prize with an 85 gross and 71 net.

For retired players (handicap 19–28), A.K. Okeniyi won the best net prize with an 84 gross and 61 net, while D. Dilli secured the second net prize with an 89 gross and 64 net. Job Ademola earned the best gross prize with a score of 97 gross and 78 net.
