Defection: Shekarau’s camp continues deliberations today

The Shura Council of Senator Ibrahim Shekarau’s political structure will today continue its deliberations on whether or not the former governor should leave the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) barely two months after defecting from the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Daily Trust reports that Shekarau has been in contact with the APC and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in recent weeks, with the two leading political parties making overtures to poach him from the NNPP.

This followed the unrest that arose as a result of Shekarau and his associates’ dissatisfaction with the arrangements NNPP, which they believe denied them party tickets to contest for elections in 2023 based on the agreement they reached before joining the party from APC.

However, the Shura Council meeting scheduled for Thursday which was expected to decide on the next step for the Kano Central senator and his followers could not be concluded because of some setbacks.

Shekarau’s spokesman, Dr Sule Ya’u Sule, confirmed to our correspondent that the meeting which started early on Thursday could not conclude and reach a position because some of the sub-committees saddled with some responsibilities could not conclude their assignments.

He said some of the sub-committees like the one meant to sample public opinion on the development said they needed more time to come up with their report, hence that the meeting had to be adjourned to 3pm on Friday.

Meanwhile, a member of the Shura Council told Daily Trust yesterday that it was not true that Shekarau and his associates joined the NNPP at a time it became too late for the party to submit their names to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) as stated by the leader and presidential candidate of NNPP, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.

He said it was on record that most, if not all Shekarau’s associates, joined the NNPP in June, alongside their leader, noting that INEC’s last day of withdrawal/replacement of candidates was July 15, for presidential and National Assembly, and August 12, for governorship and Houses of Assembly.
