Defection: Ayade knows fate Friday, 20 sacked lawmakers appeal verdict

A Federal High Court in Abuja has fixed Friday, March 25, for judgement in the suit seeking to remove Governor Ben Ayade of Cross River State over defection.

Justice Taiwo Taiwo fixed the date for the suit number THC/ABC/CS/975/2021 after lawyers in the matter had adopted their arguments.

Emmanuel Ukala (SAN) appeared for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) from where Governor Ayade decamped to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), while Mike Ozekhome (SAN) appeared for Ayade.

The court had on Monday ordered 20 lawmakers, comprising 18 members of the Cross River State House of Assembly and two members of the House of Representatives, to vacate their seats following their defection from PDP to APC alongside the governor.

However, the lawmakers have appealed the judgement through a notice of appeal brought under seven grounds.

In the appeal by Ozekhome, the lawmakers asked the Court of Appeal in Abuja to set aside the judgement of the high court.
