Niger state government has called on the Federal Government to declare state of emergency on the Minna-Suleja road, which it said, has been claiming lives due to its deplorable state.
Commissioner of Information, Culture, and Tourism, Mr Jonathan Vatsa told newsmen on Monday that the daily tragedy on the Trunk A road occasioned by its condition warrant such calls.
He said the road which works on its dualisation has since stopped and has become a nightmare to motorists plying it, noting the work was beyond the state government.
He said that the call for the federal government’s immediate intervention has also become more imperative because of the strategic importance as it links the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja with some states of the federation.
Vatsa noted that the state government had earlier intervened by rehabilitating “dangerous spot” on it some months back but the collapse of the Tegina –Birni Gwari-Kaduna road has put serious pressure on it as motorists diverted heavy duty vehicles to the Minna –Suleja road thereby worsening the situation.
“The road is above us, above our resources, and since the contract for the dualization of the road was earlier awarded, we are appealing to the federal government to call back the contractor to site because what the road needs is immediate palliative”, he said.
