Southern Ijaw, the local government which has 184,401 registered voters, will be the deciding factor in the Bayelsa governorship election.
Candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the election, Senator Douye Diri, has maintained the lead.
Diri, who lost Brass, home local government area of Chief Timipre Sylva, APC candidate, having polled 12,602, behind Sylva’s 18,431, however maintained 58,577 lead, having scored a total of 150,511 votes against Sylva’s 91,934 in the seven local government areas announced.
During the 2019 governorship election, APC scored the total of 124,803 votes in Southern Ijaw, while PDP scored a paltry 4,098 votes.

Though, the candidate of APC in 2019 governorship election in the state, Chief David Lyon, is from Southern Ijaw LGA, but the area is always a stronghold of APC since 2015 election.
While the result from the area is still being awaited, Bayelsa State Collation Officer, Prof Kuta Farouk, Vice Chancellor of the Federal University, Minna, Niger State has announced adjournment of the collation for an hour.
