Death toll from Kano’s mosque attack rises to 23

The death toll from the arson attack on worshippers by a 38-year-old Shafi’u Abubakar at a mosque in Larabar Abasawa community of Gezawa Local Government Area of Kano in May, 2024, has increased to 23, leaving only two survivors.

Checks by a Daily Trust correspondent on Wednesday at the Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital, where the victims of the attack received treatment, revealed that 22 out of the 24 admitted were dead.

One victim taken to Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital also succumbed to injuries, bringing the death toll to 23. Two persons, however, survived the attack.

Our correspondent observed that one victim is still on admission and recovering, while another has been discharged and is back at home.

Daily Trust reported that Abubakar allegedly sprayed the area with petrol, locked the door and set the mosque on fire while worshippers were observing their morning prayers (Subhi prayers), trapping over 30 worshippers.

The suspect has been arraigned before an Upper Shariah Court presided over by Halhalatu Zakariya and remanded in a correctional facility.
