Death of chairman: Lawyer wants deputy to be sworn in as replacement

A human right lawyer, Barrister Bilyaminu Maihanchi has called on the Taraba State Governor, Darius Ishaku, to swear in the vice chairman of Ardo-Kola Local Government, Alhaji Ismaila Zakari, as the substantive chairman to close the vacuum created by the death of the council chairman Salihu Dovo, who was killed in January this year by unidentified gunmen.

Barrister Maihanchi while reacting to the position of acting chairman given to the vice chairman, said it was unfair and unjust for the governor to name the vice chairman to serve in an acting capacity instead of swearing him in as the substantive chairman as provided by the Nigerian Constitution and Taraba State House of Assembly law on Local Government Council.

However, a media aide to the governor, Bala Dan Abu, said it was not true that Governor Ishaku refused to swear in the vice chairman as a substantive chairman.

He said it was because of the circumstances in which the chairman was killed and investigation was still ongoing in the matter.
