Dambe, a traditional sporting activity practised predominantly in northern Nigeria is gathering momentum by the day as it has begun to attract sponsors and more supporters in Kano.
This is made possible by the Dambe Warriors tournament which is aimed at enhancing and promoting the traditional sport.
Daily Trust had reported how the tournament has been changing the lives of the combatants who are now paid salaries for their effort.
Speaking about the development, the Co-organiser of the tournament, Chidi Anyina said “The league saw the need to upgrade the status of the traditional sports. We want to reach the standard of premier or champions leagues that’s why you can see an upgraded arena today.
“It is our dream is to continually upgrade the arena to be in the capacity of the stadium. This arena can seat 5000 spectators. What is limiting us is the size of the stadium. We are targeting a 20,000 capacity area.
“We are putting the league in place to be properly structured and guiding the combatants. It won’t be like the random local fights that we had before. We are here to give these fighters a room to grow. These fighters are now earning even more then some footballers in this country.”
