The minister for youth and sports development, Solomon Dalung, on Tuesday inaugurated a 33-man National Transition Committee of the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) as well as the Congress Planning and Electoral Committees to pilot the affairs of the council for the next six months.
Dalung, who said he will remain a youth till he goes to his grave, during the inauguration, said they fought for the youth council in their hay days but that today’s youth have sold their destiny in the name of looking for money and cheap publicity.
“Some of the youths sold their destiny for peanuts as they were given Keke NAPEP, wheel barrow, bicycles and others. They collected these and stood on our streets with convoy longer than that of the president of Nigeria laying claims to being youth leaders. But I must say that the history we are making today would never accommodate such.”
He charged the committee members not to put any seal on their cars, adding that he would direct the relevant security agencies to impound such vehicles. “Because it is those seals you put in your cars that make you forget that you owe the young people of this country a duty.”
Dalung charged those above 35 years of age to remain at the advisory committee while the leadership is handled by those that are 33 and below.
The newly inaugurated President, Murtala Muhammed Garba, called on Nigerian youths to be law abiding, good citizens of the country and to love one another irrespective of cultural and religious inclination.
“We are using this forum to sensitise the youths across the country to shun any type of violence and participate in politics and governance. We should be well and self-educated and also pray that God unite us as one entity.”
