Daily Trust’s Aminiya opens new Hausa writing contest today

Aminiya, the Hausa edition of Daily Trust Newspapers, is opening a new short story contest today.

The competition, sponsored by Aminiya Trust, in collaboration with Open Arts and Gandun Kalmomi, Kaduna, seeks short stories of between 1,000 and 1,500 words for the 2020 edition that explores the theme ‘Challenges of Democracy and Politicking in Nigeria.’

The contest is open to writers worldwide between the ages of 18 to 35. Joint entries of up to a maximum of two writers per story are also allowed.

All entries should be sent to [email protected] <mailto:[email protected]> as a Microsoft Word attachment, including full name, a short bio, home or office address and phone number.

Submissions open from May 15, 2020 and will close on July 15 2020 at 11:59pm West African Time.

Entries sent outside the submission window will not be considered.

The top three entries will be awarded prizes as follows: First position N250,000, second position N150,000 and third position N100,000.

The top 15 entries will be published as part of an anthology and certificates of recognition will be provided.

The brand-new competition sponsored by Aminiya-Trust newspapers, hopes to serve as a beacon for the development of Hausa literature. It will be organized annually under the stewardship of Gandun Kalmomi and Open Arts.

Writers are allowed to play around with the 2020 theme in various forms in their stories. Non-fiction of any kind, translations or other genres of writing will not be accepted.

In August 2020, three selected judges will go through the long list and identify the winners.

Winners of the 2020 Aminiya-Trust Hausa Short Story Competition will be announced in September 2020.

Between September and October 2020, the top 15 entries will be edited and published as part of an anthology with the top three entries translated into English for worldwide distribution.

In November 2020, the 15 writers on the long list will be interviewed and published in Aminiya, other Trust Newspapers and in Gandun Kalmomi and Open Arts platforms. Afterwards, in December 2020, an award ceremony will be held in Kaduna.
