Daily Trust appoints Deputy Editor-in-Chief

Media Trust Limited, publisher of the Daily Trust newspapers, has appointed Dr Suleiman A. Suleiman as Deputy Editor-in Chief and Chairman of Daily Trust Editorial Board.

The appointment, announced in a statement by the Acting Chief Executive Officer, Nura Daura, was approved by the company’s Board of Directors.

The new Deputy Editor-in-Chief is expected to provide support to the Editor-in Chief in driving the new editorial and managerial policies of the company into the future across its all multimedia platforms: print, TV and digital.

Speaking on the appointment, the Acting Chief Executive Officer, Mal. Daura, welcomed Suleiman to the Daily Trust team, saying “We are very glad to have him on board.  I believe that the company will benefit from his wealth of experience.

“As changes occur in the media space, the Board and management of Media Trust have continued to strive to ensure that our readers are served the best and the appointments they make are tailored towards achieving that goal.

‘‘We are indeed confident that the new Deputy Editor-in-Chief will add value to the paper in no small measure’’.

Also speaking, Editor-in-Chief, Naziru Mikailu, maintained that Suleiman’s arrival is a great addition to the Daily Trust diverse newsroom, adding,  “our readers are already familiar with his thought-provoking and in-depth analysis of national and international issues via his weekly column titled, The White Paper, which features on the Monday back page of the paper. As Deputy Editor-in-Chief/Chairman, Editorial Board, he will be playing a key role in planning and leading our coverage of major national issues, especially as we approach the 2023 election season’’.

The Editor-in-Chief further stated that Suleiman’s understanding of the media industry, expertise in politics, governance and policy, both as an academic and a journalist will enable the newspaper to continue to deliver unrivalled journalism to readers across all platforms.

About the Deputy Editor-in-Chief

Suleiman holds a PhD in Media and Politics, from the University of East Anglia, Norwich, United Kingdom, through a highly competitive and prestigious doctoral fellowship provided by the university in 2013.

His thesis, titled “Investigative Journalism and Press Coverage of Corruption in Nigeria (1999-2012)”, examined the political economic conditions under which individual reporters and media organisations initiate and report news about high level corruption in Nigeria.

An updated version of this research is being published in book form as ‘Politics, Corruption and the Press in Nigeria (1999-2019).

He also holds a Master’s degree in Political Communication from Coventry University, United Kingdom, and a Bachelor’s degree in Mass Communication from Bayero University, Kano, where he won several awards for best graduating student.

He has had 14 years combined experience in teaching, researching and practising journalism, and was until his appointment an Assistant Professor of Media, Politics and Governance at the American University of Nigeria, Yola, where he was also Chair of the Communication and Multimedia Design department.

His research has been published widely in leading academic journals and books in the field, including most recently a chapter (with Dr Emeka Umejei) in the 3rd edition of the popular text, Investigative Journalism (2021) edited by Hugo de Burgh and Paul Lashmar, published by Routledge.
