D-Day as NFF AGA holds today in Lagos

After a protracted delay, the stage is finally set for the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to hold its 77th Annual General Assembly (AGA) today in Lagos.

Before now, the AGA of the NFF couldn’t hold in December 2021 as the federation was entangled in a court case instituted against it by Seigha Obiene, a retired football player and director of Nembe City, challenging the validity of the election of the Amaju Pinnick-led NFF Board.

The Bayelsa High Court subsequently issued an injunction restraining the NFF from holding the AGM earlier slated for December 17, 2021

However, following the allegation by football stakeholders that the NFF president was using the court order to attempt to elongate his second tenure, some of the state FA chairmen came together and prevailed on Obiene to withdraw the court case which he has since done.

With the suit finally out of the way, the State FA Chairmen on July 2 then gave the NFF Executive Committee no later than two weeks to hold its General Assembly, preparatory to the September Elective Congress.

Some of the state FA chairmen have been on a perceived ‘war path’ with the outgoing president, Pinnick over his now botched third-term ambition.

Meanwhile, heated arguments can’t be ruled out at today’s meeting as aggrieved congressmen are poised for war with the leadership of the NFF over the 2022 election.

What most of the congressmen are clamouring for is the 2022 NFF election which they are insisting must be conducted unfailingly in September.

Therefore, the General Assembly is expected to consider a roadmap towards this year’s NFF Elective Congress expected to hold on or before September 20, 2022, as well as such items as may be proposed by the congressmen or Members of the Executive Committee.

Expected at the AGA are Chairmen and Secretaries of the 44 Members of the NFF congress made up of Football Associations of all the 36 States and the FCT; the Leagues; Coaches Association; Referees Association and; the Players’ Union), members of the NFF Executive Committee; invited dignitaries; NFF Management and Staff and; a number of other stakeholders.
