Customs seize N2.9bn worth contraband in Q1 2024

The Federal Operations Unit Zone A of the Nigeria Customs Service, on Friday said it impounded contraband items worth N2.9 billion in the first quarter of 2024 and arrested 29 suspects.

Top on the list of the items seized is 12,278 bags of 50kg rice totalling about 21 trailer loads.

Addressing newsmen on the achievements of the unit in the first quarter of the year, the Customs Controller in charge of the Federal Operations Unit (FOU), Zone A, Hussein Kehinde Ejibunu, said the seizures recorded were due to violations of various sections of the Nigeria Customs Service Act 2023, the federal government import and export prohibition guidelines.

Ejibunu said the unit while vigorously and relentlessly executing its anti-smuggling campaign, recorded a total of 206 seizures worth the sum of duty paid value of N2,877,049,777 while 29 suspects were arrested.
