A magistrates’ court in Illorin has ordered the remand of a suspected cultist, Ibrahim Olamilekan Saad, alias Confidence, in the federal Correctional Centre, Oke Kura.

Saad was charged with criminal conspiracy, illegal possession of firearms and being a member of a secret cult.

The offences which contravene section 6(b) and 27(1) (c) of robbery and firearms (Special Provision) Act Cap R11 LEN 2004 and section 2 are punishable under section 14 of secret cult and secret societies (Prohibition) Law 2016.

The defendant was arrested by Sgt Isiaka Abubakar posted to Rotana Hotel along Fate/Basin road, Ilorin.

He was nabbed with a nylon bag containing one locally made pistol, one live cartridge and a bottle of Codeine syrup at the poolside of the hotel.

The prosecutor, Nasiru Yusuf, said: “Further investigation revealed that Saad is a member of Eiye secret confraternity and has named some of his cohorts as Goke Olumide a.k.a GO, Samson Emmanuel and Suleiman Yusuf all of whom are members of the same confraternity.”

He prayed the court to grant another date in order for the police to complete the investigation and arrest others who are still at large.

The magistrate, Ibrahim Mohammed, ordered the remand of the defendant in prison. The matter was adjourned until January 6, 2022 for further mention.
