Senator Ahmed Lawan, the preferred candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the Senate presidency and Senator George Akume yesterday attended the inauguration of the Senate Standing Committees by the Senate President, Bukola Saraki.
The duo attended the inauguration, at a time when the spokesman of their camp, Senator Kabiru Marafa, declared the unilateral increase in number of standing of the committees as illegal.
Our correspondent reports that Lawan and Akume were among the chairmen of the committees inaugurated by Saraki.
While Lawan was inaugurated as the chairman of the Defence Committee, Akume, who was tipped to be the Deputy Senate president by Lawan’s camp was inaugurated as chairman, Committee on Army.
When contacted by newsmen, Lawan declined comment, saying “I’m on retreat for press interviews now.” Speaking during the inauguration, Saraki urged the chairmen of the committees to carry along members of their respective committees.
He also asked the committees to shun anything that would drag the Senate into disrepute.
“The leadership of all Senate committees must run an inclusive structure and avoid creating an impression that the affairs of the committee is a one-man show, “he said.
