A cross section of Senior Secondary school students as well as undergraduates of various universities in Cross River State were seen at the Calabar office of the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) on Friday morning, protesting against the order of the registrar, Prof Is’haq Oloyede for the immediate relocation of the state office to Akwa Ibom State.
Security operatives who took over the JAMB office in Calabar to avert vandalisation, told reporters that the registrar had given the order because they were not enjoying any support from the state government and were also exposed to dangers.
The armed operatives from the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) as well as officials of JAMB spoken to who pleaded not to be named said the office was not in any way conducive for their administrative operations because of the activities of hoodlums and state agency called Cross River Transport Regulatory Agency (CTRA), popularly called ‘100 Marian’ which share the same premises, and leave its impounded vehicles there.
“This was the reason why the registrar who visited the office, and saw its state, gave the order that since the state government has not responded to repeated appeals for a conducive office, we should move immediately to Akwa Ibom State.”
“This morning student groups have come here with placards, pleading that the Cross River JAMB office should not move. We understand they also stormed the governor’s office for same reason”, a security officer stated.
Repeated phone calls to the commissioner for education in the state, Godwin Ettah were not answered. However, the state governor, Prof Ben Ayade while addressing WAEC at their AGM assured that his government will continue to give full support and cooperation to educational agencies in the state.
