The Cross River State Government has taken its sensitization campaign on the novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) to both Calabar Municipal and Calabar South local government areas to educate residents on safe hygiene measures to adopt in order to forestall an outbreak of the disease in the state.
The government’s team, led by the state Commissioner for Health, Dr Betta Edu, alongside her team in the Ministry of Health, on Friday visited several houses, motor parks and markets as part of efforts to ensure the public is well informed on protective measures.
She pointed out that with the confirmation of Coronavirus in Lagos state and neighbouring Cameroon, the state has stepped up its port health task force for screening of people arriving the state and also surveillance.
Speaking with transporters, including the management and members of Keke riders’ association at their Secretariat, Dr Edu said the state governor, Prof. Ben Ayade, is very passionate about the health of all citizens in the state and promised to build a health post to attend to all emergency health needs in the area.
She urged transporters in the state to be on red alert and report any suspected case to the government through public hospitals spread across the state.
She said that the Chinese workers at Akamkpa who arrived the state recently have been under surveillance and self-isolation.
She called on all transporters and residents to take their personal hygiene seriously by washing their hands with clean water and soaps regularly and by keeping eyes on their passengers in case they noticed any possible signs of the disease.
She therefore called on members of the public to promptly report anyone noticed with fever, coughing, headache and history of travel to countries already affected by the outbreak.
The commissioner assured all Cross Riverians that their safety is topmost on the mind of Governor Ayade.
Dr. Edu also shared hand sanitizers, among other protective items to transporters in the area.
In his remarks, the state Director of the road traffic service (VIO), Engr. Paul Bepeh, lauded the state government for the sensitization and vowed to ensure that all transporters in the state have hand sanitizers in their vehicles and kekes and also use it properly.
