Crack in Afenifere deepens as Adebanjo’s faction meets today

The struggle for the soul of the pan-Yoruba socio-political organisation, Afenifere, is not yet over as a faction loyal to the acting leader, Pa Ayo Adebanjo, is expected to meet in Ogun State today (Tuesday).

The meeting is coming less than a week after another meeting held in the Akure residence of Pa Reuben Fasoranti who reportedly sacked Adebanjo as the acting leader of the group.

However, many Afenifere members loyal to Adebanjo have rejected the Akure resolution, insisting Adebanjo remains the acting leader and the authentic leader of the group following the resignation of Fasoranti in 2021.

Last Wednesday, the crisis rocking the organisation worsened as the Fasoranti group abrogated the office of its acting leader; effectively displacing Adebanjo as the leader, affirming Fasoranti as the leader.

The unfolding developments following the Akure meeting would be discussed today, it was learnt.

The Secretary General, Chief Sola Ebiseni, who confirmed the meeting, said, “This meeting has been held monthly upon the resignation of Chief Reuben Fasoranti from leading Afenifere in 2021.”

Speaking with our correspondent, a chieftain of the organisation and former Lagos State Deputy Governor, Chief Kofo Bucknor Akerele, said those who converged on Akure last week were not real Afenifere members.
