The Commissioner of Police in Lagos State, Idowu Owohunwa, on Wednesday, raised the alarm over a worrisome trend of locally fabricated replicas of foreign made pistols, AK 47 and other assault rifles in the state.
The police boss said the worrisome trend indicated an increasing local expertise in the fabrication of various types of firearms.
Owohunwa made this disclosure while briefing the Acting Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, who was on a tour of police formations in the state.
He said the present distinctive security challenges in the state is on account of its demography and socio-economic interplays.
According to him, the internal security space in recent times has been laced with the threats of cultism, armed robbery, kidnapping, murder and sexual and gender-based violence.
He said the command is also constantly confronted with the challenge of dissecting and dealing with the thin line between the civil and criminal dynamics of land disputes, which he said are also prevalent in the state.
He said also of routine concern is the traffic gridlock and the attendant occasional traffic robberies, which are compounded by on-going road projects across the state including, in particular, the Lagos-Ibadan highway.
