The Niger state House of Assembly Tuesday kicked against total lockdown of the state by the state governor Abubakar Sani Bello with a curfew over coronavirus.
The house however changed the movement restriction from 5pm to 8am instead of 8am to 8pm as earlier imposed by the governor.
The House further changed the word ‘curfew’ to ‘restriction’ , arguing that the word curfew sounded despotic and can only be used during violent crisis.
The House, which passed resolutions to that effect during plenary on Tuesday noted that their action was sequel to a motion of urgent public importance moved by member representing Bosso constituency, Hon. Malik Madaki Bosso on the dusk to down curfew imposed by the governor.
The member argued that the dusk-to-dawn lock-down would worsen the situation than serving as a preventative measure.
He said with the worsening poverty, hunger and suffering, stopping people from hustling for their daily survival was more suicidal than anything anyone can imagine. He then called on the government to reconsider its position on the curfew.
Contributing to the debate, Hon Husseini Yabagi Akote, member representing Gbako said although the move was to prevent the threat of coronavirus, the economic and social impact of the restricting order will be devastating to the masses.
