Lagos State Government has blamed the resurgence of COVID-19 pandemic in the state on non-adherence to safety guidelines, reopening of schools, large religious congregation and social gatherings.
The state Commissioner for Health, Prof Akin Abayomi, stated this on Monday while presenting data on COVID-19 in Lagos State between February and December.

He said out of the 24 million people in Lagos, only 213, 623 tests had been conducted so far, with 28, 774 cases testing positive.
Abayomi also said the influx of travelers to the country has further increased the number of cases.
He also cautioned residents against patronising individuals that sell fake COVID-19 results.
“We are currently putting in processes to identify both buyers and sellers and we will not hesitate to prosecute either to the full extent of the law,” he added.
Meanwhile, over the weekend, several parties were held in Lagos with halls packed with guests, our correspondents’ report.
One of such parties was the one held at Queens Park Event Centre Oniru, which video emerged showing a fully crowded hall with guests not observing the social distancing protocol.
The state government through the Ministry of Tourism Arts and Culture has revoked the license of the event centre while the State Safety Commission also sealed the facility for contravening the COVID-19 protocols of the State.
The Commissioner for Tourism, Pharm. Uzamat Akinbile Yussuf said the step to withdraw the license was taken in the best interest of the state and implored other event centres to comply with the government’s laid down directives or lose chances of doing business in Lagos.
The Director General of Lagos State Safety Commission, Mr. Lanre Mojola said over 12 facilities were sealed during routine enforcement and monitoring operation.
Mojola mentioned that recalcitrant establishments that broke the government seal and continued partying would be charged to court once documentation has been properly processed.
He urged the public to maintain and observe all the necessary safety precautions, maintaining that they must take responsibility and cooperate with the government to effectively curtail the virus.
